More than 300 people from organizations representing chemical manufacturers, environmental and public health advocates, regulators, and consumer product goods companies came together at the GlobalChem Conference and Expo Monday to explore enhancing current federal chemical management policies.
Speaking at a panel on Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Modernization, American Chemistry Council (ACC) president and CEO, Cal Dooley, said, “Our highest priority is public health and safety. Americans deserve to have confidence that the products they buy are safe for the uses for which they were designed. Chemical products are fundamental to our modern way of life, from the clothes we wear to the medicines that keep us healthy to the products that enable additional sources of energy and greater energy efficiency.
“While TSCA has been protective of public health and the environment, we recognize that more can be done to harness the advances made in science and technology over the past three decades. We are committed to developing a new comprehensive chemical management law that puts the safety of the American consumer first, while ensuring the innovation that will lead to the development of essential new consumer products and high-paying American jobs. ACC and its members welcome Congressional activities to modernize TSCA and are working with stakeholders, Congress, and the Administration to make reform a reality.
“Paramount to the success of a comprehensive legislative proposal is the ability to discuss ideas and concepts in a transparent fashion and allow for meaningful discussion by all key stakeholder groups. Today’s conference is another step in the right direction. We look forward to continuing our work with colleagues in industries that rely on our products, environmental, labor, and consumer advocacy groups, and the government to develop a new approach to chemicals management that is first in class.”
For more than 20 years, the GlobalChem Conference and Expo has provided a unique educational opportunity for chemical industry professionals by providing attendees with information and interaction with experts on timely chemical regulatory developments, emerging issues and trends in the product stewardship arena, and international regulations.
