Nutrien Buys Plant and Soil Health Firm Actagro for $340M

Canadian crop inputs firm Nutrien recently entered into a definitive agreement to purchase American soil and plant health products and technologies manufacturer Actagro LLC for $340 million, a company press release announced Tuesday.

“The acquisition of Actagro is aligned with Nutrien’s strategy to invest in higher-margin products that provide strong value for growers,” said Nutrien President and Chief Executive Officer Chuck Margo in a statement. “Actagro has a strong track record of developing and manufacturing high-value crop nutrition products and we see a significant opportunity to expand the business by leveraging the global reach of our Retail network and expansion of Actagro’s strong relationships with domestic and international distributors.”

Actagro’s portfolio of 30 specialty products are produced at two production plants in the U.S. in Arkansas and California and distributed globally through retailers and distributors. Under the terms of the deal, Nutrien will take possession of Actagro’s research and development team and its near complete research and development facility in California

Regulators in the U.S. must approve the transaction before it reaches a close. Nutrien said it expects the acquisition to create $55 million in run-rate EBITDA within two years of the deal’s conclusion.
