Massive Fire Destroys Oilseed Processing Plant in Canada
November 6, 2018
Firefighters responded to a massive fire at the Family Friendly Farms oilseed processing plant in the St. Boniface city ward of Winnipeg, MB on Monday afternoon that sent a large volume of black smoke into the surrounding area.
Three workers evacuated the facility after the fire started at about 1 p.m., with one later receiving treatment for smoke inhalation. Firefighters arrived at the plant and observed smoke coming from a processor cooker located outside of the structure, coverage by CBC said.
“The building has sustained significant damage, and there’s roof collapse and structural collapse,” Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Assistant Chief Ihor Holowzynsky told the television news station.
Crews stayed at the scene through the night to monitor the scene and put out hot spots. The City of Winnipeg said in a press release that the structure was a “total loss.”
A report by the Winnipeg Free Press noted that the incident was the third fire at the site in the past 18 months.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
