A worker fell 80 feet into a large silo at the Holly Sugar plant in Tracy, CA Saturday morning and died from his injuries.

South County Fire personnel lowered a firefighter into the silo to extricate the victim, who had fallen into machinery at the bottom of the silo. According to officials, it took 16 personnel about an hour to remove the victim from the silo.

“This was an extremely challenging operation that our crews handled safely with the required precision needed for this type of incident,” said South County Fire Chief Randall Bradley.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
