November 18, 2014
Registration is open for five courses from the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) and Kansas State University (K-State) Distance Education Program. Four of the classes are available in English and run from Jan. 5-Feb. 6, and the fifth course is available in Spanish and runs from Jan. 12-Feb. 13.
GEAPS 520: Grain Quality Management is a resource for anyone responsible for grain quality, including those who work with storing and conditioning, aerating, drying, pest control or mycotoxin management. Participants learn about quality control and measurement methods, and international grain-grading standards.
GEAPS 520: Grain Quality Management – Spanish covers the same content as the English version, but is available for the first time in Spanish. This course runs from Jan. 12-Feb. 13, and registration runs from Nov. 17-Jan. 5.
GEAPS 522: FGIS Grain Inspection Orientation was developed by the USDA’s Federal Grain Inspection Service in conjunction with GEAPS and K-State. This course introduces the basics of grain inspection. It also provides a history of grain inspection and an overview of general inspection techniques.
GEAPS 550: Materials Handling I is the first in a three-part series and focuses on the properties and flow characteristics of grains and other dry bulk materials. Students will be able to determine various material characteristics and their effect on the selection and sizing of bins, spouting and screw conveyors.
GEAPS 554: Equipment Maintenance I teaches safe function, monitoring, adjustments, maintenance and repair of equipment used in grain facility operations. Lectures cover the parts, components and troubleshooting of bucket elevators, drag conveyors, distributors, valving and gates. They also touch on maintenance methodology, dust suppression and collection, power drive transmissions, screw conveyors and bin sweeps.
GEAPS 520 and GEAPS 550 both count towards the Credential in Grain Operations Management and the Credential in Grain Processing Management. The credentials are earned by completing six required courses. For more information on the credential program, visit GEAPS/K-State Distance Education program website.
