Edible powders that contain protein, energy, or other health and wellness benefits are expected to be one of 2018’s top food trends, according to a recent forecast released by Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market.

The premium supermarket chain listed “super powders” as the second biggest food trend predicted for next year behind floral flavors.

“Because they’re so easy to incorporate, they’ve found their way into lattes, smoothies, nutrition bars, soups, and baked foods. For an energy boost or an alternative to coffee, powders like matcha, maca root, and cacao are showing up in mugs everywhere,” Whole Foods said in a press release announcing the forecast.

Beyond energy-lifting powders, products that pack contents that offer a nutritional boost are also gaining popularity.

“Ground turmeric powder is still on the rise, the ever-popular spice used in Ayurvedic medicine. Smoothe fans are raising a glass to powders like spirulina, kale, herbs, and roots for an oh-so-green vibrancy that needs no Instagram filter,” the company said. “Even protein powders have evolved beyond body builders to pack in new nutrients like skin- and hair-enhancing collagen.”

Overall, the predicted trend appears to be driven by consumers’ increasing shift to healthier lifestyles.
