An explosion Wednesday afternoon at the DSM Resins chemical plant in Augusta, GA while welding work was being performed, killing one worker and injuring several others, various local news organizations reported.

The victim was identified as 29-year-old Steven Gonsalves of Beech Island. Two additional employees were transported to an area hospital to receive chemical decontamination.

“Based on current information these were contractors working on site,” said High Welsh, president of DSM North America, in a statement to the Augusta Chronicle. The incident is under investigation by the company.

It is unclear what chemicals the other workers may have been exposed to. No evacuation of the facility occurred as a result of the incident.

The Augusta plant manufactures powder coat paint resins.
