Fire at Pet Food Plant Caused by Water Leak

The leak sparked the fire in a mechanical system.

A water leak sparked an overnight mechanical fire at Hill’s Pet Nutrition in Topeka, KS, reports local news WIBW 13.

The Topeka Fire Department told local news that around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, emergency crews were called to Hill’s Pet Nutrition for reports of a fire.

When first responders arrived, they said they quickly found the fire and were able to extinguish it.

Crews said they found the a water leak had sparked the fire in a mechanical system.

TFD noted that no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. One truck company, three engine companies and two battalion chiefs aided in the operation.

On August 29, a structure fire occurred at the plant. Firefighters at the scene found smoke billowing from the building as well as a small fire in an exhaust vent.

Hill's Pet Nutrition has three pet food manufacturing plants in Kansas. The most recent plant, in Tonganoxie, just opened on October 16.

At the beginning of the year, Hill's announced a move of its headquarters to Overland Park, KS, from Topeka by year's end. Its Pet Nutrition Center and manufacturing site will remain in Topeka.
