Four people were killed in a fire that broke out at a pharmaceutical factory in Punjab’s Amritsar district in India on Thursday.

The chemical explosion took place at the Kwality pharma factory in Majitha Road, Nag Kalan on Thursday evening, killing four employees.

Fire extinguishing teams from the municipal corporation, Ram Seva Society, Khanna Paper Mill, and the airport were called in to attend to the fire. The administration requested fire brigade vehicles and JCB machines (excavators) from Majitha as well.

Station House Officer of Majitha, Balwinder Singh said the fire was brought under control after some time.

He said four factory workers, including a woman, were found lying unconscious on the floor. They were rushed to a hospital, where they were declared dead, police said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, they added.

The smoke from the fire spread across the village. Ten fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames.
