August 29, 2019
Biomass processor Fibonacci LLC recently opened a new, 15,000-sq-ft automated facility in Murray, KY that will produce sustainable wood from hemp fiber and soy-based adhesives, Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin announced in an August 22 press release. The project created 25 new jobs.
“Kentucky continues leading the way in the rapidly growing hemp industry, and the opening of Fibonacci’s HempWood facility highlights that progress,” Gov. Bevin said in a statement. “This company is developing a product unlike anything else on the market, and we are grateful that they have selected the commonwealth for this innovative venture.”
The company currently contracts about 2000 tn of hemp stalks from West Kentucky producers. With the opening of the plant, Fibonacci will purchase about 20% more hemp from farmers in 2020.
“This new facility will be the first step in our roll out of HempWood and provides the ability to produce up to a million board feet of our four-quarter lumber per year,” the firm’s founder and chief executive officer, Greg Wilson, said in a statement. “We look to sell these boards to end customers and downstream manufacturers for use in flooring, furniture, and home goods made in the USA.”
Fibonacci said it selected the site in Murray because its relationship with Murray State University and the institution’s Center for Agricultural Hemp.
