A trade group representing manufacturers of pet food and treats, The Pet Food Institute (PFI), launched a new video and web content on Thursday to draw attention to the manufacturing process of pet food products and the safety practices currently in place.

“Pet lovers have questions about their dog’s or cat’s nutritional needs and PFI is here to provide straightforward answers,” President and chief executive officer of PFI, Cathleen Enright, PhD, said in a press release. “For PFI members, bringing transparency to the pet food manufacturing process is just one way we can support pet ownership.”

Released in the wake of recent headlines reporting recalls of pet food and treats due to manufacturing or safety errors, PFI said its members follow strict practices to ensure food safety and nutrition while adhering to rigorous regulatory oversight.

“Pet food and treat makers are working to ensure they have reliable and trusted ingredient suppliers, maintain hygienic and secure facilities, conduct inspections and testing of ingredients, monitor the manufacturing of food and provide traceability assurances during packaging,” the organization’s release said.

Founded in 1958, PFI represents firms that produce 98% of U.S. dog and cat food and treat products.
