Chocolate maker The Hershey Company is moving forward on plans to build a new, 810,000-sq-ft fulfillment center and warehouse in South Annville Township, PA to support its manufacturing facilities and a distribution center in the area, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf announced in a release Tuesday.

“Consumers continue to gravitate to our iconic brands in increasing numbers, and as our business continues to grow, we need more advanced fulfillment capabilities here in our home state,” Jason Reiman, senior vice president and chief supply chain officer for the Hershey, PA-based snack manufacturer, said in a statement. “As we scale our production at our plants to serve consumer demand, we want to be ready to fulfill those needs with additional and flexible fulfillment capabilities.”

The company plans to invest $178 million to construct the new facility. About 35 direct, full-time jobs are expected be created through the project over the next three years. To support the effort, Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) proposed that Hershey’s receive $105,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits (JCTC) once the full-time jobs are created. DCED also proposed $28,000 in workforce development training funding.

Operations at the new fulfillment center are expected to commence in late 2021. Hiring is projected to start next spring.

This summer, the company also announced plans for a $135 million project to expand production at its facility in Stuarts Draft, VA. The site manufactures peanut cream and penuche that is used in a variety of Hershey’s products.
