ADM and UI to Explore New Pet Food Ingredients

Agricultural processor and food ingredient provider Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and the University of Illinois (UI) Department of Animal Sciences formed a collaboration to develop alternative pet food ingredients, the Decatur, IL-based company announced Thursday.

Dr. Maria R. Cattai de Godoy, assistant professor in the Companion Animal Nutrition Program at UI said in a statement that the partnership with ADM's Animal Nutrition business will also “support the education of undergraduate and graduate students and to advance the education and dissemination of scientific findings and innovative solutions for the pet food industry.”

Researchers will explore uses of “innovative and versatile” ingredients like peas, beans, ancient grains, complex proteins, and vegetable-based omega fatty acids in companion pet food, in addition to ADM’s proprietary ingredient and premix offerings.

Ingredients offering immunity and digestive health benefits to pets will also be a focus of research for the collaboration.

“This is a synergistic initiative which combines the scientific expertise and research capabilities of our program with ADM’s extensive ingredient portfolio to offer nutritional and health benefits for pets,” said Cattai de Godoy.
