Isolation Critical to Combustible Dust Explosion Safety Planning

Industrial processes, by their nature, create dangerous, explosive dust/air mixtures in operating equipment such as dust collectors, mills, etc. If ignition sources cannot be eliminated due to process conditions or requirements, these systems must be equipped with explosion protection equipment such as venting and isolation devices (i.e. NFPA Standards 652, 654.)

When an isolation device is installed and an explosion occurs, connected ductwork will be isolated or “decoupled” from protected equipment so that flames and explosion pressure will not be conveyed into other equipment and spread throughout the plant.

With the REMBE Q-Flap inlet isolation device series, explosions in nearly every industry can be effectively isolated—including metal dusts applications. The Q-Flap series is a fully ATEX-approved, NFPA-compliant passive explosion protection device that is cost effective and easy to install and maintain, relative to other alternatives. There is no need for actuation sensors. In the event of an explosion, the Q-Flap "flap" shuts tight from the force of the pressure wave. A locking mechanism prevents the Q-Flap from flutter, keeping the explosion isolated from the rest of the process upstream. Safety monitoring sensors assure that the Q-Flap is in good operating condition.
