Private label cosmetics manufacturer Faber-Castell Cosmetics plans to build its first North American production plant in Elgin, IL, the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity announced in a Sept. 13 press release. The $9 million plant for cosmetic pencils will employ about 50 full-time workers.

“I am proud to announce this project during the 40thyear of Faber-Castell Cosmetic,” the firm’s president, Countess Mary von Faber-Castell, said in a statement. “The U.S. facility will become Faber-Castell’s beta factory with exceptional, industry-standard processes and systems, in addition to offering U.S. customers the same speed-to-market and convenience now enjoyed by Europe and Brazil.”

Based in Stein, Germany, Faber-Castell is most recognized for its colored pencils and pen products. The cosmetics-focused unit of the firm produces nail care solutions and color cosmetics.

“Adding a North American facility is a remarkable milestone for our company,” Dr. Christina Zech, managing director of Faber-Castell Cosmetics, said in the release. “Illinois now joins Brazil and Germany on our list of production sites. The strategic location in between the coasts along with the exceptional workforce Illinois boasts made it a natural choice for our next facility.”

Production at the 45,000-sq-ft facility in Elgin is slated to begin this October, the company told The Chicago Tribune. Products made at the site will be available for sale early next year.
