Several injuries were reported after two explosions and a fire Monday morning at the Verla International Ltd. cosmetics plant in New Windsor, NY, the Middleton Times Herald-Record and other area news organizations reported.

Officials told the Associated Press that 13 people were injured in the wake of the blast. Five firefighters were among that group. Those with injuries were transported to area hospitals. Firefighters and hazmat crews responded to the scene and closed down several nearby roadways, the Times Herald-Record said.

The town supervisor, George Green, told the Herald-Record that flames had spread throughout the plant when fire crews arrived. A local fire department described the incident to the AP as a “five-alarm chemical fire with multiple counties helping.”

A private label contract packaging and filling firm founded in 1980, New Windsor-based Verla offers nail polish, color cosmetics, personal care items, creams, lotions, fragrances and more, according to the company’s website. Its 50-acre campus features 250,000-sq-ft of manufacturing, warehouse, office, and laboratory space.
