14 Storage Silos Collapse

Fourteen metal storage silos containing 11,500 tons of canola seeds collapsed Tuesday at the Sentraal-Suid Koöperasie agricultural co-operative in Swellendam, South Africa. No one was injured.

The cause of the collapse was unknown but an investigation was planned.

The silos were said to be about 20 years old. An alternative storage facility was being sought to attempt to salvage the seeds. Eight silos remained standing and the possibility of them collapsing was a concern.

Sentraal-Suid Co-operative Ltd operates in the Southern Cape, with its head office located in the town of Swellendam. The company, founded in 1931, has been serving its members as a co-operative for more than 80 years.
