DSM Teams Up with Avril to Produce Plant-Based Protein

Health and nutrition solutions firm Royal DSM is partnering with France-based agro-industrial group Avril to produce a new plant-based protein from non-genetically modified canola, a company press release announced Monday.
“With 10 billion inhabitants by 2050, experts predict global demand for both animal and plant-based protein to grow, with exponential group in plant-based proteins due to dietary shifts,” Avril’s chief executive officer, Jean-Philippe Puig, said in a statement. “Through this collaboration, Avril and DSM intend to join forces to contribute through innovation to meet the growing demand.”
The companies plan to open an industrial production facility at Avril’s Saipol facility in Dieppe, France to manufacture the canola proteins. Products produced at the site offer high nutritional value, a balanced taste profile, and a range of functional properties, according to DSM. End uses for the ingredient include baked goods, bars, and ready-to-mix products.
“More people are opting for flexitarian, vegetarian, and vegan diets for personal, health, and environmental reasons. With our expertise, DSM can support all forms of proteins produced to the highest sustainable standards. With Avril as a partner, we will be uniquely positioned to serve the growing market and look forward to helping our customers deliver great tasting, healthy, and sustainable food and beverages,” DSM Chief Innovation Officer Trish Malarkey said in the release.
Canola proteins made by Avril and DSM are projected to become commercially available by the end of 2021.
