Bulk Solids System Design: Understanding Your Material
Understanding your material can be critical to project success
March 31, 2022
Powder Show South Booth 320 - While well documented for decades, the challenge of system design for bulk solids is often underestimated by young and experienced professionals alike. This can lead to capital projects running behind schedule and over budget due to poor material flow, rate limitations, or process non-uniformity.
A first step towards minimizing the risk of challenges associated with bulk solids flow is to gain a true understanding of the material for which a system is being designed. On the surface this may appear to be a simple concept, but behavior of a bulk solid is impacted by numerous interdependent variables that can have a critical impact on the system success or failure. Whether it is response to environmental conditions, component MOC, or stress history, a single material can behave very differently.
Understanding your material and applying this understanding to system design can be critical to project success and requires strong expertise in material testing, flow behavior, and designing bulk solids systems.
