Several minor oral injuries prompted Hormel Foods Corporation to issue a recall of 228,614 lbs of SPAM and Hormel Foods Black Label Luncheon Meat contaminated by metal pieces, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced in a press release last Saturday.

“The problem was discovered after the firm received four consumer complaints stating that metal objects were found in the canned products,” FSIS said, noting, “There have been reports of minor oral injuries associated with consumption of the products.”

Manufactured at Hormel’s Freemont, NE plant in February this year, the impacted goods include 12 oz cans of SPAM Classic and 12 oz cans of the luncheon loaf bearing a “Best By” February 2021 date. The SPAM cans were shipped throughout the U.S. and the luncheon loaf was sent to Guam.

Hormel has operated the Freemont site since 1947 and employs some 1500 workers at the facility, according to information on the company’s website.
