Paints and coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel is committing €30 million (about $34.9 million) to expand its capacity for powder coatings at its Como, Italy production plant, the company announced in a release Thursday.

The project at Europe’s largest coatings plant will increase production of powder coatings for the automotive industry and serve as a strategic backup for AkzoNobel’s plant in Arnsberg, Germany, where an additional production line is being installed.

“We are implementing a structured expansion plan to boost capacity at both our Como and Arnsberg sites,” Daniela Vlad, business director of AkzoNobel Powder Coatings, said in a statement. “It will help to strengthen our market position and provide us with back up should we encounter supply issues.”

The additional capacity is being installed in a renovated building at the Como site. AkzoNobel is investing in advanced equipment and technology for the site to increase efficiency and productivity. Recycled energy will be used to power the new assets to reduce the site’s consumption of electricity.

“Although powder coatings are already inherently sustainable, we’re also committed to making our own buildings and facilities as sustainable as possible,” Vlad said. “The company has set a clear ambition to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050, so we’re accelerating our efforts to embrace renewable energy and introduce more smart manufacturing technology.”
