Fire at International Flavors and Fragrances Plant

A fire started in the International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) production plant in Rockland, ME on Sunday after product overheated in a processing area, officials said in local media reports.

Crews were dispatched to the Lime Street facility after receiving word of the blaze at about 4:46 p.m., coverage by Village Soup – Knox said. Over 30 firefighters from five fire departments responded to the incident, using some 500 gal of water to douse the flames.

The fire reportedly started due to overheated product in a processing area of the IFF plant, according to the Penobscot Bay Pilot. Workers called firefighters after fumes prevented them from putting out the flames.

No injuries were recorded during the incident. Firefighters managed to contain the flames to one structure at the site, NewsCenterMaine.com said.

The Rockland plant was formerly operated by chemical firm DuPont.
