Schenck AccuRate Wins Environmental Achievement Award
April 28, 2009
On behalf of the Whitewater, Wisconsin community and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Schenck AccuRate has received the second annual Whitewater Environmental Achievement Award for the design and manufacture of its alternative fuel feeding system.
The product was chosen for its ability to lower the emissions of greenhouse gases produced from the use of fossil fuels in cement manufacturing processes. Key to the system is the ability to meter waste materials such as PET bottles, saw dust, tires, paper, wood chips, rice, bone meal, and others to the main burner and calciner of a cement kiln, reducing the need for non-renewable fossil fuels such as coal. Replacing only 5 tn/hr of fossil fuel by operating the system 24 hours a day is the equivalent of removing nearly 20,000 cars from the road annually.
The emissions lowering system consists of a docking station with live bottom bin for semi-trailers, a chain conveyor, weigh feeder, blow-through rotary feeder, rotary piston blower, pneumatic conveying line, and measuring, control, and supervisory electronics for continuous operation. The semi-mobile system features a small footprint so no special foundations are necessary and can be set up on virtually any firm surface where a truck can drive. Placement of the system next to the cement kiln or up to a distance of 300 ft from the burner is possible. Dismantling and reconstructing in any other part of the plant can be done within a short period of time.
Critical features of the system include precise accuracies, a wide range of feed rates, and consistent flow of material to the cement kiln. Accuracies of ±1% within a range of 1:20 and feed rates from 0.25 to 10 tn/hr help produce even and pulsation-free conveying of fuel through the blow-through rotary feeder. This consistency and the overall environmental impact of the alternative fuel feeding system have made it ideal for cement manufacturing operations throughout the world.
The Whitewater Environmental Achievement Award was created by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and the city to reward individuals and companies that have implemented programs to uphold environmental sustainability.
