USDA Recall Report: September 2023

Meat, egg, and poultry recalls for the month.

There were 10 recalls during the month of September by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. That’s more than August, which had seven. Here is the rundown.

Two recalls were due to foreign matter inclusion, two for without benefit of inspection, three for misbranding/undeclared allergens, one for possible E. coli contamination, one for possible under processing, and one for ineligibility for import.

Here is the breakdown of recalls:
 

Misbranding/Undeclared allergens

  • Green Valley Foods, Devils Lake, ND, is recalling approximately 4,062 lb of frozen meat pizza. The product contains soy, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label. The frozen meat pizzas were produced from Sept. 20, 2022, through Sept. 20, 2023, and might contain the lot codes 2632 through 2633. The brand of the pizza is Grubberputz.

  • A public health alert has been issued for ready-to-eat Kirkland Signature chicken tortilla soup due to misbranding. The label declares the product as gluten-free, which is not accurate. The product affected is 2 lb tubs containing ‘Kirkand Signature Chicken Tortilla Soup with White Chicken Meat” with use by date of 11/23/23 and lot code 1394066.

  • Custom Made Meals LLC, Denver, CO, is recalling approximately 1,345 lb of product labeled as Bacon-Wrapped BBQ Seasoned Chicken Grillers but actually contain Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeño Peppers Stuffed with Cream Cheese due to misbranding and undeclared allergen. The product contains milk, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label. 

Possible foreign matter contamination

  • Conagra Brands, Marshall, MO, is recalling approximately 245,366 lb of frozen chicken strips entree products that may be contaminated with pieces of plastic. The frozen chicken strips entrees were produced on June 20, 2023, July 11, 2023, and July 17, 2023. It affects 8.9-oz. cartons containing one entree of "Banquet Chicken Strips Meal” with best if used by "DEC 11 2024," "JAN 01 2025," or "JAN 07 2025" and lot numbers 5009317120, 5009319220, or 5009319820.

  • Hillshire Brands Co., St. Joseph, MO, is recalling approximately 15,876 lb of blended meat and poultry smoked sausage products that may be contaminated with bone fragments. The ready-to-eat blended meat and poultry smoked sausage items were produced on June 14, 2023. The product is the 14-oz. Cryovac package containing one rope of "Hillshire Farms Smoked Sausage Made with Pork, Turkey, Beef” with lot codes "EST. 756A 20 19:00:00 through 21:59:59 and EST. 756A 21 19:00:00 through 21:59:59" and use by date of "Nov 11 23.” 

Without benefit of inspection

  • Empacadora Frape USA LLC, importer of record, Houston, TX, is recalling approximately 20,455 lb of frozen, not ready to eat pork chicharron and pork carnitas products that were not presented for import reinspection into the US. Products are: 19- to 24-lb. box containing “Chicharrón con carne/Pork Skin with Meat” with lot codes 2193CON0281, 2203CON0283, 2213CON0285, 2223CON0287, 2233CON0289 and use by date between August 7-11, 2024, and shipping mark 176; 24- to 30-lb. box containing “Carnitas de Cerdo/Seasoned Pieces of Pork Meat” with lot codes 2123CON0272, 2133CON0273, 2193CON0282, 2203CON0284, 2213CON0286, 2223CON0288, 2233CON0290 and use by date between July 31, 2024-August 1, 2024, and between Aug. 7, 2024-Aug. 11, 2024.

  • JC International Inc., importer of record, Atlanta, GA, is recalling approximately 17,428 lb of frozen, raw pork products that were not presented for import reinspection into the US. The product is 15-kg/33.07-lb. cases containing “Frozen Pork Front Hock” with case code 18019 and Cert. No. 251497 and best before dates between July 14-27, 2025.


Possible E. coli contamination

  • American Foods Group LLC, doing business as Green Bay Dressed Beef LCC, Green Bay, WI, is recalling approximately 58,281 lb of ground beef products that may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. Impacted products include: Approximately 80 lb cases of 10 lb plastic tubes (chubs) of “90050 Beef Fine Ground 81/19” lot code D123226026; approx. 80 lb cases of 10 lb plastic tubes (chubs) of “20473 Beef Halal Fine Ground 73/27” lot code D123226027; 80 lb cases of 10 lb plastic tubes (chubs) of “20105 Beef Fine Ground 73/27” lot code D123226027. 

Possible under processing

  • A public health alert was issued for canned meat due to under processing. The canned meat item was produced by Hormel Foods Corp., Austin, MN, on Aug. 17, 2023. The product affected is 12-oz. metal cans containing "SPAM Classic" with "Best by Aug. 2026" date and lot code A08173. 

Not eligible for import

Del Valle Import and Export LLC, distributor and importer, Kenner, LA, is recalling approximately 1,271 lb of ready-to-eat pork chicharrones that was imported from Honduras, a country ineligible to export pork products to the US. This product is subject to recall, regardless of the product date 100g foil pouch packages containing “Del Rancho Chicharrones Autenticos 100% Product De Cerdo.
