Americans are turning to chocolate and candy products for comfort during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

Americans have increased their spending on chocolate and candy during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, according to new data published by the National Confectioners Association (NCA). The organization found that chocolate and candy sales have grown by 3.8% since March 15, 2020.

During that period, sales of chocolate accelerated by 5.5% and premium chocolate by 12.5%.

“Consumers appreciate and value chocolate and candy during these uncertain times because of their uncanny ability to boost moods and lighten perspectives,” the organization said in a press release announcing the release of the data.

Chocolate and candy sales have grown by 3.8% from March 15 to August 9. During that period, sales of chocolate accelerated by 5.5% and premium chocolate by 12.5%.

Sales of chocolate and candy grew dramatically in the grocery channel. From mid-March to the end of August, sales of the products at grocery stores ticked up by 16.6%, according to NCA’s data. Premium chocolate sales in the grocery channel grew by 21.4% over the past several months and chocolate sales rose by 17.9%. Grocery sales of non-chocolate products were lifted by 13.5%.

Earlier this summer, The Hershey Company revealed plans to build a new 810,000-sq-ft fulfillment center and warehouse in South Annville Township, PA and expand its production facility in Stuarts Draft, VA in response to increased demand.
