Pet food and treats supplier Mars Petcare is injecting $82 million into an expansion project at its Kansas City, MO manufacturing site to increase production of dog and cat treats, Missouri economic development officials announced.
The company intends to install new processing and packaging equipment to boost its capacity for Greenies brand treats by over 75%, or upwards of 940 million treats annually. Funds will also be used to improve the location’s utilities and infrastructure.
“We’re proud to deepen our commitment to Kansas City and our associates who play a critical role in continuing to deliver product innovation to meet the new ways pet parents seek to bond with and feed their pets,” Ikdeep Singh, global president of Mars Pet Nutrition, said in a release issued July 27 by the Missouri Department of Economic Development.
Construction on the project commenced earlier this year. The company projects work will reach completion in early 2023.
Mars Petcare’s plant in Kansas City currently produces Greenies Pill Pockets, Greenies Dog Supplements, and Greenies Dental Dog Treats, as well as Pill Assist Cat by Royal Canin.
“We applaud Mars Petcare for its commitment to Missouri and its continued investment in Kansas City,” Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said in a statement. “Since the facility opened in 2006, Mars Petcare has embraced local talent to create jobs and boost the regional economy. We look forward to seeing the additional positive impact this expansion will have for our state.”
