Food manufacturer Kellogg Company announced Wednesday that it reduced its scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its manufacturing sites by over 28%. The achievement is more than one year ahead of the company’s goal to lower GHG emissions by 15% for each pound of food it produces.

“As a global food company, we have a responsibility to address the significant risks climate change poses on people and our planet,” Amy Senter, chief sustainability officer for Kellogg Company, said in a company release. “We’re proud of our progress and are working on multiple fronts to reduce emissions across our supply chain.”

To support progress on the goals, Kellogg’s increased its use of low carbon and renewable energy sources, purchases of renewable electricity and the energy efficiency of its operations. Kellogg debuted its first sustainability commitments in 2008 and set science-based targets to limit global warming in 2015.

As part of the firm’s goal to use 100% renewable energy in its operations by 2050, about 28% of its food production plants currently obtain electricity from renewable resources.
