Canadian firm Global Food and Ingredients Inc. (GFI) has purchased a pet food ingredients manufacturing site in Bowden, AB as part of its launch of its new Plant-Based Pet Food Ingredients business unit, a company release announced Friday.

“This acquisition provides a significant growth opportunity for GFI to enter the fast-growing pet food market, furthering the plant-based movement. We can now offer healthy and sustainable, high-protein formulated plant-based ingredients for pets that are cost effective and replace animal-based ingredients,” GFI CEO David Hanna said in a statement. “The new capabilities acquired through this acquisition enhance the company’s operations and represents a key step forward in realizing GFI’s zero waste strategy, maximizing the value of every step throughout our production systems while boosting profitability.”

The plant produces pet food ingredients at the location using blends of milled red lentils, green lentils, chickpeas, pinto beans, yellow peas, and green peas, enabling pet food manufacturers to hone in on specific nutritional profiles.

In addition, GFI’s Bowden location will extract ingredients from byproducts sourced from other company facilities.

Financial terms of the transaction were not included in the firm’s release.
