Frank Yiannas, the Food and Drug Administration’s deputy commissioner for food policy and response, resigned from his position Wednesday.

Yiannis sited problems with the structure of the foods program as the reason for his departure. He said he considered leaving last year but did not because of the infant formula contamination crisis at Abbott Laboratories. Although the plant has reopened, US Justice Department is investigating the plant, located in Sturgis, MI.

Yiannis, who has held the top safety position since it was created in 2018, said he will be leaving on February 24.
