A huge explosion at the Androscoggin Mill in Jay, ME just before noon on Wednesday “miraculously” resulted in no casualties or injuries.

According to the Maine Fire Marshal's Office, the explosion took place in the digester area of the mill. A digester uses pressure to turn wood chips into paper pulp. No one was working in the digester area at the time of the blast.

Androscoggin Mill officials said everyone on site was accounted for. Some workers suffered respiratory issues, but were treated and released.

“It’s nothing short of a miracle and we are grateful,” said Roxie Lassetter, human resources manager for Pixelle Specialty Paper Solutions, owner of the mill.

An investigation was scheduled for Thursday morning.
