Firefighters were sent to the Interplastic Corp. specialty chemical plant in Fort Wright, KY Monday night after an explosion was reported at the facility.

“The nature of the call was described as an explosion involving a storage vessel housing a polyester resin,” the City of Fort Wright said in a release posted to its Facebook page. “Crews arrived on scene and were able to contain the fire which caused minimal property damage.”

Several neighborhoods near the Latonia Avenue facility were told to shelter in place during the incident as a precaution. First responders also created a 1000 ft perimeter as they worked the scene.

“The situation is active but contained and no immediate threat is believed to exist. As the chemical resin continues to cool down it is off gassing and occasionally emitting a loud popping noise,” city officials said. “These are not considered explosions but rather a normal cooling process.”

Officials lifted the shelter in place order on Tuesday morning, the City of Fort Wright said in a later release. No one was injured during the incident.
