Thermoset resins manufacturer Hexion is preparing to launch an expansion project at its Portland, OR plant to add a second automated production line at the site to produce its new ArmorBuilt fire resistant wrap, the Columbus, OH-based firm announced Wednesday.

The first automated line is slated to become operational in the first quarter of this year. Hexion is currently working to secure permits for the second automated manufacturing line, and the company expects the assets to start up around the end of 2021.

“Our ArmorBuilt fire resistant wrap has been extremely well received by the utilities industry,” Scott McIntyre, North American Business Director, Performance Additives, for Hexion, said in a release. “The additional automated capacity will enable us to meet the strong demand for this fire-resistant wrap that leverages Hexion’s innovative resin technology and ultimately helps mitigate the devastating impact of wildfires by protecting the critical utility infrastructure. Targeted investments like these, in partnership with our customers, are a key part of our global growth strategy that the company continues to execute against going forward.”

The company is working with a large North American wood pole producer to make ArmorBuilt the go-to solution for Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) in protecting utility pole infrastructure in areas that are prone to wildfires.

Hexion is active in the global adhesive, coatings, composites and industrial markets.
