American industrial and consumer products manufacturer 3M announced Tuesday that Dow Chemical Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Jim Fitterling will join its board of directors on February 5.

Fitterling has served Dow for over three decades. He became the company’s CEO in 2018 and its chairman in April 2020. Prior to occupying the material science firm’s top roles, he was president and chief operating officer of Dow and chief operating officer of DowDuPont’s Materials Science division.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Jim to our board,” 3M’s chairman and CEO Mike Roman said in a company release. “Jim has a deep understanding and appreciation of how materials science can spark meaningful, sustainable innovation and a strong track record of advancing environment, social, and governance goals. His experience in these areas and many others will bring valuable insight to our board.”

The addition of Fitterling to 3M’s board comes as the company continues to face financial headwinds during the COVID-19 pandemic. In December, the company revealed plans to cut 2,900 positions across its global footprint as part of a cost-cutting effort. 3M said it will eliminate redundancies and position the company to capitalize on trends in e-commerce, personal safety, health care, automotive electrification, and home improvement.
