PBS South is where technology and innovation meet to set the course for the future of bulk processing. Attendees will find new dry processing and bulk handling solutions as well as presentations on topics that affect the industry.

Both new and seasoned professionals will learn from top industry executives sharing their expertise and experiences in powders and bulk solid handling.

Here are three sessions that will take place at PBS South (part of IME South, a 6-in-1 expo):

Combustible Dust Safety – From Pilot Plant to Production

Tuesday, June 4, 1:45 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Speaker: Robert McFeaters, VP, Project Manager of Industrial Process Safety at HGI Fire

This session will introduce the hazards of combustible dust as they relate to the scale-up process from pilot plant operations to production. The presentation will provide an overview of combustible dusts hazards, a review of pertinent codes and standards in the US, and a review of common pitfalls in the scale-up process from pilot plant operations to full production environments. Attendees will leave with the ability to recognize the risk of combustible dust handling equipment in their facility and understand the typical prevention, protection and mitigation strategies for various pieces powder-handling equipment that form the Basis of Safety for the equipment. Additionally, the presentation will focus on the pertinent tests for combustible dusts as they relate to the design of safety systems.

Attendees will learn:
1. Identify the elements necessary for a Fire, Flash Fire, or Explosion involving combustible dusts to occur.
2. Understand the different types of testing for combustible dusts and the importance of the tested parameters in the design process.
3. Understand the impact of siting combustible-dust handling equipment in existing facilities.
4. Identify potential protection, prevention, and mitigation strategies that form the Basis of Safety for powder-handling equipment.

Life after the DHA

Tuesday, June 4, 2:45 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Speaker: Payton Ball, Sr. Sales Engineer at REMBE Inc.

This afternoon session will discuss Navigating and interpreting the results of your Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA). It is relatively common knowledge across the industry that DHAs are required. Most are very detailed and have many required action items. This presentation will help bridge the gaps between DHA recommendations, qualifying/prioritizing items, and taking action.

Solid Solutions: Advancements in Logistics of Bulk Solid Recyclables

Wednesday, June 5, 1:45 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Speaker: Karla Sperati, Integrated Supply Chain Fellow at DOW

In this presentation, we review the current status of recyclable solid materials logistics and highlight gaps to achieve an economy of scale that would allow us to reach the 2030 Global Sustainability Goals.

The inorganic growth of recycling facilities increased the complexity of supply chains. Small-scale waste solids handling equipment requires extra labor and multiple units to keep up with demand. Densification capability is low, increasing transportation cost per unit weight. Those are some factors hindering the ability to keep steady growing rates of recycling capacity.

No sector is better positioned to rise to the challenge than established bulk solids and powder handling companies. Creating alternatives for standardization of solids waste handling and fostering the emergence of Collaborative Logistics Models such as shared warehousing, pooling arrangements, and reverse logistics networks are key transformations needed to lead recycling to an economy of scale.
