Fire and electrical safety organization The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) introduced a new online training program this month that focuses on industrial combustible dust hazards and the prevention of fires, flash fires, and explosions.

Based on NFPA 652: Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust, the three-part NFPA 652 Combustible Dust (2019) Online Training Program provides is geared to help professionals in manufacturing operations across a wide array of industries, including mining, wood products, metalworking, agriculture, and food production.

The first course, Combustible Dust Safety Awareness, covers personal, peer, and facility safety, as well as situational awareness. NFPA’s second course, Combustible Dust Hazard Evaluation, offers an overview of Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) and how to utilize the information it provides. A final course, Combustible Dust Controls and Safeguards, highlights various safety controls that can be implemented in operations, and discusses combustible dust handling and related processing systems.

Each course is set in a grain mill where participants are asked to identify potential risks, carry out a DHA, and take steps to use the recommendations from the DHA. NFPA uses videos, interactive simulations, case studies, and other materials to provide instruction on codes, safety considerations, and best practices.
