American agribusiness Cargill announced Wednesday that it is investing $75 million in pea protein producer PURIS to help the firm to open a new manufacturing facility in Dawson, MN. Once completed, the expansion will double PURIS’ output of the food ingredient.
“As consumer demand increases for plant-based proteins, we want to make sure that Cargill, with our partner PURIS, can deliver on that demand with great tasting, sustainable, and label-friendly pea protein for customers in North America and across the world,” the lead of Cargill texturizers and specialty, Laurie Koenig, said in a company press release. “This investment also provides significant support to the local economy with approximately 90 new jobs and a new revenue stream for Midwest farmers.”
PURIS’ pea protein is a vegan, non-GMO, and organic ingredient that can be used across a wide range of food and beverage applications. With the opening of the Dawson facility, The company will own and operate three production sites in North America.
“Our investment in pea protein not only enhances our diverse portfolio of high-quality ingredients but also expands our opportunity to work with customers to make products that use a variety of our ingredients to satisfy customers around the world,” Koenig said.
Construction on the new facility is slated to start immediately, and it is slated to become operational by late 2020.
