Specialty materials firm Arkema revealed plans Monday to open a new production plant for polyamide 11 (PA11) powders on its Changshu platform in China. The addition of the asset will aid the company in meeting demand for advanced bio-circular materials in Asia.
“We are very excited about this expansion. There is strong and growing demand in Asia across all of our key powders markets and this added capacity will enable us to supply the region from within the region,” Erwoan Pezron, senior vice president, High Performance Polymers for Arkema, said in a statement.
The company currently manufactures Rilsan brand PA11 powders from castor beans at a location in France. Arkema’s product is used in a variety of applications, including home appliances, additive manufacturing (3D printing), and transportation.
Arkema’s new powders plant will complement a new PA11 plant under construction in Singapore. Once operational, the facility will be the world’s largest integrated bio-factory for high performance polymers, according to the company. The project will boost the firm’s global PA11 capacity by 50%. Production at the Singapore site is slated to commence in the first half of 2022.
The Changshu powder production site is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2023.
