The world’s largest privately held flavor and fragrance producer, Firmenich, held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday to initiate the construction of a flavors manufacturing facility in Zhangjiagang, China, the Swiss firm announced by press release. The company said the new facility will enable Firmenich to serve customers in China with quicker speed-to-market and improved operational capabilities.

“Our significant investment in Zhangjiagang reinforces our long-term commitment to China, our second largest market worldwide,” said Gilbert Ghostine, chief executive officer of Firmenich, in a statement. “It is critical for us to operate with world-class capacity and technology in China, to best meet the dynamic innovation needs of our global and local customers.”

Expected to open in 2019, the firm said the facility will support Firmenich’s existing manufacturing operations in Shanghai and Kunming, as well as the company’s R&D site in Shanghai and commercial offices in Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou.

“By significantly increasing our flavor production capacity in China, we are accelerating our customers’ access to our flavor solutions,” Boet Brinkgreve, president of Firmenich China and Global Ingredients, said in the firm’s press release. “This cutting-edge plant is designed to not only increase our operational efficiency, but also to optimize our environmental footprint.”

Firmenich said the plant will be built according to “the highest sustainability standards” and is planned to include water treatment and emission management systems. The site will also house high efficiency processing equipment, lighting, and other elements to optimize the plant’s energy consumption.
