About 240 jobs will be created by a $320 million investment project announced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co. Wednesday to construct a new manufacturing plant and distribution center in Hartwell, GA.

The planned facility is the first investment Purina has made in its U.S. production capabilities in several decades.

“The Hartwell site will be an excellent location for Purina’s first new U.S. factory in 20 years,” John Bear, vice president of manufacturing for Nestle Purina, said in a company press release. “We’re excited and look forward to closing on the property and bringing more quality jobs to the state of Georgia, as well as expanding Purina capacity and distribution in the southeest.”

After the company’s projected close on the property this year, Purina will invest $320 million in the site through 2023. The new distribution center is slated to open in 2019.
