Nestle Portugal is investing €5 million ($5.6 million USD) in the expansion of its distribution center in Avanca, Portugal, European Supermarket Magazine (ESM) and FoodBev.com reported.

“This investment prepares our Avanca distribution center for the challenges of the next generation, as well as providing greater environmental efficiency in Nestle’s production chain by allowing a significant reduction in intermediate loading movements,” said Jörg Deubel, director of logistics operations at Nestle Portugal, in ESM’s coverage of the effort.

Officials said the Swiss food and beverage giant plans to add 4100 sq m of warehousing space to the site’s existing footprint, the ESM article said. Nestle expects the expansion to be completed by the end of 2018.

“By approving this considerable investment in our Avanca distribution center, Nestle recognizes the excellence of our local logistics operations and the importance of the Avanca hub in Nestle’s industrial structure in Portugal,” Jordi Lach, director of Nestle Portugal, said in the FoodBev.com report.

The Avanca site is the company’s primary distribution site in the country, shipping about 80% of goods sold by Nestle Portugal domestically and abroad.
