Filtration System Fire at Asphalt Plant

Firefighters responded to an asphalt facility in Sweetwater, FL on Wednesday morning after a blaze ignited in a filtration system, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said in a post to its Facebook page. 

Called to the site at about 10:45 a.m., crews arrived at the scene and observed flames in the equipment. 

“These types of fires are hard to fight due to the fact that asphalt is a difficult material to extinguish,” the fire department said. “Asphalt burns at extremely high temperatures and it requires intensive work and a large fire crew to be able to apply large amounts of water to reduce the temperature of the material and ultimately put out the fire.”

The plant was evacuated during the incident and crews worked for several hours to douse the fire, television news station WSVN reported.

News reports and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s post did not identify the company that operates the Sweetwater plant. 

No injuries were logged during the response. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
