Comar Inc. Acquires Universal Container Corp.

Comar Inc., a leading manufacturer of plastic pharmaceutical dispensers and packaging, recently acquired Universal Container Corp., also known as Unicon, in a move that adds production capability to meet increased customer demand.

The company, whose customers include the two biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world and the largest maker of health care products, has seen sales jump 21 percent in the first four months of 2010 over the same period a year ago. To handle increased demand for the plastic containers, liquid measuring cups, and dispensers its customers use, Comar purchased Unicon's manufacturing plant in Puerto Rico, which adds 47 employees and 90,000 sq ft to its production capacity.

President Mike Ruggieri said the plant also puts Comar in the desirable position of having redundant manufacturing capabilities so if something interrupts production at one plant, the other can still fulfill orders. "That's very important for the pharmaceutical customer base", he said.

Comar will retain the current management team and focus attention on introducing more energy-efficient production equipment at the plant. Since electricity costs are about double what they are in Comar's New Jersey facility, the installation of this equipment can result in substantial savings for the company.
