An industrial accident claimed the life of a worker at a Dow Chemical facility in Mount Meigs, AL on Tuesday morning, officials told several local news organizations.

Fire and law enforcement personnel were called to the Ohio Ferro Road site at about 9 a.m., Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Leigh Persky told NBC News affiliate WSFA. No details on the circumstances of the worker’s death were available, he said.

The sheriff’s office has opened an investigation into the cause of the fatality, Capt. Persky said in coverage by the Montgomery Advertiser.

“We’re not saying it was anything more than an accident, but it is just standard operating procedure to investigate what happened,” Persky said in the newspaper article.

The plant in Mount Meigs is run by DC Alabama Inc., which is affiliated with Dow Chemical. The facility manufactures high-grade silicon metal that is used in chemical and aluminum applications, according to information provided by Dun & Bradstreet. Chemical firms use the metal to produce cosmetics, lubricants, gaskets, polysilicon, and other products.

Four workers at Dow Chemical’s petrochemical plant in Plaquemine, LA tested positive for the novel coronavirus COVID-19, Powder & Bulk Solids reported last week. The company said it implemented its pandemic response plant to ensure that “business critical work” continues at the site.
