Purina Animal Nutrition Recalls Rabbit and Turkey Feed

Animal feed supplier Purina Animal Nutrition issued a voluntary recall this week for several lots of rabbit and turkey feed because of concerns that the products may be have elevated levels of calcium, the company said in an announcement recently posted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website. 

The recall includes Purina brand rabbit and turkey feed, Country Acres brand rabbit feed, and DuMOR brand chick starter/grower feed. Several other types of chicken and turkey feed were also recalled. Purina Animal Nutrition is owned by Land O’ Lakes. 

“Purina Animal Nutrition received reports from customers claiming that rabbit products may have resulted in poor health and/or mortality,” the company stated in the annoucement. “No reports have been received for the chicken or turkey products.”

Elevated calcium carbonate levels can kill rabbits and cause leg abnormalities and kidney calcification in young chickens and turkeys. 

The feed involved in the recall was produced by Purina Animal Nutrition between Dec. 16, 2019 and Feb. 3, 2020. Impacted lots were sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Nebraska, South Dakota, Florida, Virginia, North Dakota, North Carolina, South Carolina, Colorado, California, West Virginia, Texas, Hawaii, and Arizona. 

Customers in possession of products from the recalled lots are urged to throw the goods away or return them to their local animal feed store. 

Last month, American agribusiness Cargill voluntarily recalled one lot of 50 lb bags of NutreBeef Transition Pellet (MH) beef cattle feed because the products may contain mispackaged feed that has high levels of monensin.
