N.C. State Professor Martin Hubbe Named TAPPI Fellow for 2010

Martin A. Hubbe, Ph.D., has been designated as one of nine TAPPI Fellows for 2010. He currently serves as Professor at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. Fellow is an honorary title bestowed upon less than one percent of TAPPI’s membership. It is given to individuals who have made extraordinary technical or service contributions to the industry and/or the Association.

“Dr. Hubbe has provided exemplary service in the areas of education, research, technical guidance to industry professionals, and to TAPPI as a whole,” said Larry N. Montague, president and CEO of TAPPI. “He has a passion for education and has become known as a credible and knowledgeable resource both in North America and abroad. He exemplifies the definition of a TAPPI Fellow.”

Hubbe graduated from Colby College in Waterville, ME, with a B.A. degree in chemistry. He earned his M.S. from the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, WI and received his Ph.D. from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. He worked for several paper companies while earning his bachelor and master degrees. He began his post-college career with American Cyanamid Corp. as a research associate and continued his corporate work at International Paper Co. as a research associate and later principal scientist. Hubbe joined the faculty at North Carolina State University in 1998 where he is now a professor in the Department of Wood and Paper Science.

Hubbe is a member of the American Chemical Society and TAPPI. He has presented on more than a dozen occasions, chaired conference sessions, and chaired two conference tracks for the Association. He wrote and published the TAPPI book “Cost-Saving Strategies in Papermaking Chemistry” with co-author Kasy King, and wrote the introductory chapter of Jose Rodriguez’s TAPPI book “Microparticles and Nano-Microparticles for Papermaking.”

He has nearly 120 publications to his credit, including books and papers published in professional journals and courses at conferences. He holds five patents. Honors include the Oscar May Award/Division Award in the Paper and Board Division of TAPPI, the Advisor of the Year Award from the College of Natural Resources, and the designation as a Distinguished Scientist by the College of Natural Resources. He received a Fellowship from the Thomas J. Watson Foundation while in college.

Dr. Hubbe and the other new TAPPI Fellows will be honored at the TAPPI Fellows Luncheon, Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency, Atlanta, in conjunction with the 2010 PaperCon meeting.
