Jenike’s Carson Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Jenike & Johanson's Dr. John Carson has been awarded AIChE’s 2015 PTF award.

Dr. John Carson has been awarded AIChE’s (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) 2015 PTF (Particle Technology Forum) award.

The award recognizes a forum member's lifetime outstanding scientific/technical contributions to the field of particle technology, as well as leadership in promoting scholarship, research, development, or education in this field.

“John Carson has provided outstanding leadership to the bulk solids handling community for many years. Recognition of his contributions to technology, teaching, mentoring, and ASTM standards was long overdue. I am delighted that he was selected to receive the 2015 PTF award,” said Timothy A. Bell, P.E., engineering fellow, DuPont Particle Technology Group

Carson is president of Jenike & Johanson Inc., a world-renowned engineering consulting firm specializing in the storage, flow, and processing of powder and bulk solids.

He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1970 he joined Jenike & Johanson where he has been active in research, consulting, and management of the company.

An author of more than 140 articles on various topics dealing with solids flow, including bin and feeder design, flow of fine powders, design of purge vessels, and structural failures of silos, he also lectures extensively on these and related topics.

Besides being a founding member of AIChE's Powder Technology Forum, Carson belongs to ASME, ASCE, and ASTM International, where he is chair of subcommittee D18.24, “Characterization and Handling of Powders and Bulk Solids.”

The UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers conferred on him the honor of their ‘Solids Handling Award’ in recognition of his “Outstanding professional excellence in the technology”. This award is a measure of the unique international standing of his company, as both the original founders of Jenike & Johanson are amongst the comparatively few previous recipients of this prestigious award.

In addition, Carson is a Permanently Invited Guest to the European Federation of Chemical Engineering’s Working Party Mechanics of Particulate Solids. As such, he is one of very few non-Europeans to be so honored.
