An investigation is underway into the circumstances of a fire at an AkzoNobel coatings manufacturing facility that left one worker with serious burns.

A worker received serious burns in a fire at the International Paint Ltd coatings production plant in Felling, England on Tuesday morning, local news organizations reported. The facility, located near Gateshead, is owned by Dutch paints and coatings firm AkzoNobel.

“There was fire at our Felling site at around 8 am. The site was evacuated and the incident was attended by the on-site emergency team and emergency services and brought under control,” an AkzoNobel spokesperson told news website ChronicleLive.com, adding, “Unfortunately, one of our colleagues has suffered serious burn injuries and after receiving first aid on site, has been taken to a hospital for treatment.”

Operations halted at the site for the remainder of Tuesday. Northumbria Police told The Northern Echo it is conducting an investigation into the incident with Great Britain’s occupational safety regulator, The Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

ChronicleLive.com said in later coverage that some production resumed at the site on Wednesday in cooperation with HSE.

The facility in Felling manufactures protective coatings products, according to information on AkzoNobel’s website.
