Dust-Related Fire at Wood Products Manufacturing Plant

A fire ignited Wednesday night in a sawdust storage area of a boiler plant at the Darlington Veneer Company plywood manufacturing facility in Darlington, SC, several local news organizations reported.

The fire was called in at about 6:40 pm after a night watchman observed smoke coming from a building, Darlington Veneer General Manager Rich Smothers said in coverage by the Florence Morning News.  One of the plant’s two boilers was burning saw dust when the incident occurred.

Smothers told ABC News affiliate WPDE that some operations will be impacted by the fire: “We will have our department down tomorrow because our sawing and sanding operation has a dust system in it and that dust system feeds right into the building.”

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Darlington Vaneer is a manufacturer of hardwood plywood products for producers of fine furniture, boats, kitchen cabinets, architectural millwork, distributors, and other customers, according to information on its website. The company was founded in Darlington in 1918.
