Crews responded to a fire in a hopper at the Belstra Milling Company feed mill in DeMotte, IN in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 15th Street site at about 1:10 am to investigate a report of smoke at the facility, Keener Township Volunteer Fire Department said in a Facebook post.

“Upon arrival crews found a hopper with smoke showing from it. Once crews reached the top of the hopper they discovered the material inside was smoldering,” the fire department said in the post. “Crews applied a small amount of water to cool down the material. The product was then released from the hopper to allow crews to complete extinguishment.”

A roadway near the facility was temporarily closed during the incident. Officials said no injuries were logged.

Founded in 1954, Belstra Milling Company produces nutritional feeds and vitamin and mineral mixes, according to information on the company’s website.
