Plant-based ingredients firm Roquette intends to open “the largest pea plant protein plant on earth” in Portage la Prairie, MB this November.
“Our Canadian site increases Roquette’s global supply capacity and adds to our pea protein production facilities in France and the Netherlands,” the company said in a release this month. “The Plant for the Future grand opening will showcase our vision and believe that trailblazing is the only way forward on the quest for innovation.”
Work on the CAD$600 million (about $485 million) project commenced in 2018, a report by CBC said. The company decided to open the facility in Portage la Prairie in response to rising demand for plant-based protein products.
When the facility becomes fully operational in 2022, it will have a processing capacity of about 120,000 mt/yr of organic and conventional yellow peas, a company official told Global News. The site is expected to receive nine to 12 trucks of raw peas per day.
About 120 jobs will be created as a result of the plant’s opening.
